Patience, Contemplation, and Introspection: Featuring the Nokia 1020 and ProShot App  by Nicholas Carron

When I graduated from high school, anxiously anticipating the fine arts curricula that awaited me in college, my parents gave me a fully manual Pentax K1000 camera. Although my primary focus was to pursue a degree in graphic design, I knew that photography would ultimately play an important role in setting a foundation for me as a visual storyteller. I couldn’t wait to discover what was possible with the seemingly primitive, slightly awkward, and rather confusing apparatus I was given. How am I supposed to hold this thing? Where do I load the film? What does ISO mean? The questions were plenty, and the opportunities to experiment with my new medium were rare due to the cost of film, development, and printing.

As I progressed into my college career, which included long breaks to travel and visually record my experiences outside of the classroom, I gradually became more and more comfortable with my camera and cherished the challenges it presented me each time I framed a composition, measured light, and focused on my subject. Not only did I find the creative capabilities and technical details of photography exhilarating, I forged an appreciation for the patience, contemplation, and introspection required to capture the right moment and document an entire experience.

Prior to my entrance into the mobile photography world, I rarely used a camera other than my Pentax K1000. However, like many photographers who increasingly found themselves in the mobile space at the time, the impact of being able to conveniently photograph, manipulate, and share images via a multitude of creative and social apps was amazing. I eventually put my manual camera away and fully engaged myself in the fresh, dynamic movement that has since shown no signs of slowing down.

But slowing down has its advantages. Patience, contemplation, and introspection are distinctive qualities that I’ve come to realize as crucial in how I perceive photography and my work. I can’t pretend that the greater part of the photographic journey is paying attention to details, taking in the environment, letting go, and disassociating myself with the immediate results.

When I received the Nokia 1020 Windows Phone, I saw an opportunity to reinvent how I experience mobile photography by instilling the joys of learning how to use and extend a manual camera. The ProShot app, developed by Rise Up Games, specifically allowed me to slow down and analyze ways to measure light, experiment with exposure settings, incorporate various shutter speeds, and use basic grid overlays to help compose a composition. By moving away from a mobile work flow that had increasingly emphasized post-production and filtering techniques, I’ve discovered that my imagination, sense of place, and overall fulfillment are more in line with the how I’ve enjoyed photography through most of my life.
